HSK Exam

TL;DR:

'HSK 2 helps you expand everyday communication skills. Learn who it’s for, what you’ll achieve, and how the course builds vocabulary, grammar, speaking, and reading step by step.'

HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is the official Chinese Proficiency Test developed by Hanban, designed for non-native speakers of Chinese.

At Ramona Mandarin Studio (RMS), we use the HSK framework as a core component of our syllabus, enabling students to progress step by step, track their improvement, and build solid Chinese skills.

We'll be introducing all nine HSK levels in this series — from HSK 1 to HSK 9.

Today, we will introduce HSK 2 — exploring who it's for, what you'll learn, how long it takes, and more.

1. What knowledge will you Gain in HSK 2?

HSK 2 is the second step in the HSK learning journey, and it corresponds to Level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

By the end of HSK 2, you'll be able to understand and use basic Chinese in a wider variety of real-life themes such as transportation, hobbies, health, shopping, and more. Therefore, you would be able to hold short conversations with native speakers, and complete tasks like giving simple directions, making appointments, and describing daily routines — HSK 2 is where your Chinese starts to feel usable and real.

2. Who is HSK 2 for?

Speaking & Listening (Key Focus)

Speaking and listening remain at the heart of HSK 2. The course covers six major themes — including work, culture, personal experiences, and more — with ten core communication tasks such as asking for directions, describing products, and ordering food.

By the end of this level, you'll be able to respond to common everyday questions in simple, clear, and direct Chinese — a big leap forward in real-world communication.

To build these skills, each lesson includes speaking tasks such as picture-based storytelling, interactive pair work, and group activities, designed to give you plenty of structured speaking practice in meaningful contexts.

In HSK 2, reading becomes more meaningful — you'll start recognizing Chinese characters more confidently, while writing remains focused and pressure-free.

What will you learn?

Character learning 3

The focus is still on character recognition, not full writing fluency. You'll learn to read all 300 vocabulary words required for HSK 2, but only need to write the 14 core characters. This helps you build literacy step by step, while keeping the learning light, achievable, and connected to your speaking and listening goals.
